Getting into the city
The U-Bahn station is inside the airport, at the end of the U2 line, which means no shuttle bus and no interchange. Twelve minutes later you are at Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof, and the old town is a twelve-minute walk from there. Door to old town is realistically half an hour including the walk from the gate, which is close to the best airport-to-centre transfer of any German city.
Buy the ticket from a machine on the platform or in the VGN app before you board. A taxi is around twenty minutes depending on traffic and costs many times the fare for no meaningful gain — the U2 is faster than the road at most times of day.
If you are landing late, check the last U2 before you assume it. The service thins out after midnight, and the airport is far enough out that a taxi at 1am is a real expense rather than a rounding error.
What actually flies here
For summer 2026 the airport lists around sixty nonstop destinations across twenty-one countries with roughly twenty-three airlines. The shape of that network matters more than the number. It is heavily weighted towards leisure: the Greek islands, the Spanish coast, the Turkish Riviera, with Mallorca and Antalya among the most frequent. Alongside those sit the European network carriers — Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, British Airways, Turkish — and the low-cost operators, Ryanair, easyJet, Eurowings, Wizz Air.
What that means in practice: if you are flying from within Europe, check Nuremberg first, because a direct flight into an airport twelve minutes from the station is a materially better experience than anything involving Munich. If you are flying from North America, Asia or Australia, you will be connecting somewhere, and the choice of where matters.

Munich is the bigger airport by a distance — 220 destinations against Nuremberg’s sixty — and it is the natural assumption for Bavaria. But Munich Airport has no long-distance rail station, so the journey is S-Bahn into Munich Hauptbahnhof, then ICE, with a luggage transfer in between. Frankfurt has ICE platforms under the terminal and a direct train. On the clock, and much more so on effort, Frankfurt wins for long-haul arrivals despite being further from Nuremberg in kilometres. The airport itself
It is a genuinely small airport, which is its best feature. Security queues are usually short, the walk from the U-Bahn to the gate is a few minutes, and the ninety-minutes-before-departure advice that is a fiction at Frankfurt is roughly accurate here. It is named after Albrecht Dürer, whose house in the old town is one of the city’s better museums and is covered on the museums page.
If you land with an afternoon to spare before a hotel check-in, the lockers at the main station and a short walking tour are the obvious combination — you can be in the old town within forty minutes of clearing the gate.
