# Nuremberg Guide - an independent guide to Nuremberg, Bavaria

> Most of what people come to Nuremberg to see costs nothing to walk into: the old town, the castle courtyard and gardens, the city wall, the Christkindlesmarkt, and the Nazi Party Rally Grounds. This site says so plainly, gives the free route in full, and then says where a paid guide genuinely changes the experience - which is a much shorter list than most travel sites imply.

## Verified facts

Nuremberg (Nuernberg), Middle Franconia, Bavaria, Germany. Population about 530,000. River Pegnitz. Airport NUE. All prices below are in euros and were checked against the operators' own pages in August 2026.

- The old town is about 2 km across and takes roughly 25 minutes to walk end to end.
- Nuremberg Castle: courtyard and gardens are free and open. The ticketed part is the Palas, museum,
  Deep Well and Sinwell Tower - combination ticket EUR 10, reduced EUR 9; Palas and museum only EUR
  7; Deep Well and Sinwell Tower only EUR 4; under 18s free. There is no online booking.
- The Nazi Party Rally Grounds are open ground: free, unstaffed and accessible at any hour. There is
  no ticket and no gate. The site is about 4 sq km and the full circuit on foot takes two to three
  hours. Tram 8 to Doku-Zentrum, about 15 minutes from the centre.
- The Documentation Centre is the only ticketed part of the rally grounds: adult EUR 7.50, reduced
  EUR 2.50, family EUR 8. Mon-Fri 09:00-18:00, Sat-Sun 10:00-18:00. Allow about 90 minutes.
- Courtroom 600 is in the Palace of Justice, Fuerther Strasse 110 (U1 to Baerenschanze, then five
  minutes on foot). Adult EUR 7.50, reduced EUR 2.50. Closed every Tuesday, all year. It has not
  been a working courtroom since March 2020.
- The Christkindlesmarkt runs 27 November to 24 December 2026, daily 10:00-21:00, and 10:00-14:00 on
  Christmas Eve. The opening ceremony is 27 November at 17:30. Entry is free.
- City-run museums are EUR 7.50 each. The Nuremberg Card is EUR 38 for adults and EUR 12 for
  children aged 6-11, valid 48 hours from first use, covering about 30 sights plus all transport in
  Nuremberg, Fuerth and Stein.
- A careful day here costs about EUR 55 all in; a comfortable one about EUR 100. A day transport
  ticket is about EUR 10.60. Accommodation is the biggest variable, and December is the expensive
  month.
- Munich to Nuremberg is about 170 km: fastest ICE 1 hr 11, typical 1 hr 17, two to four trains an
  hour. Frankfurt to Nuremberg via Wuerzburg: fastest 2 hrs 01, typical 2 hrs 32, about 28 trains a
  day, usually with no change, and direct from Frankfurt Airport station.
- Nuremberg Airport (NUE) is about 5 km from the centre; U2 reaches the main station in about 12
  minutes, every 10 minutes, from around EUR 3.90. For long-haul, Frankfurt is the better gateway
  than Munich.
- Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof is about 2 minutes' walk from the old town wall, 900 m from the Hauptmarkt,
  and 1.4 km from the castle. U1, U2 and U3 all call there.
- Nuremberg Bratwurst has had PGI status since July 2003: 7-9 cm long, 20-25 g raw, sheep casing,
  marjoram the defining spice, sold in portions of 6, 8, 10 or 12. Three in a roll ('Drei im
  Weggla') is about EUR 4.50.
- Nuernberger Lebkuchen has had protected origin status since 1996. It protects where the cake was
  baked, not the recipe. Elisenlebkuchen is a quality grade, not a place: maximum 10 per cent flour,
  minimum 25 per cent nuts. Sold all year, not only in December.
- About 90 per cent of the old town was destroyed on 2 January 1945 and rebuilt. Weissgerbergasse is
  where the timber-framed houses are genuinely original.
- The best all-round months are May, June and September. December is the busiest and most expensive.
  January to March are the quietest. Trade-fair weeks push accommodation prices up sharply at any
  time of year.

## What is free, and where a guide actually changes things

Free, with no ticket and no booking: the entire old town, the castle courtyard and gardens, the city
walls, the Hauptmarkt, the Christkindlesmarkt, and the whole of the Nazi Party Rally Grounds
including the Zeppelinfeld grandstand. A visitor who books nothing at all still sees most of what
Nuremberg is known for.

Three things are different. The rally grounds carry almost no interpretation on site, so without a
guide they stay a large empty field with some concrete on it - this is the one place where a guide
changes what you actually come away with. Underground Nuremberg (the rock-cut beer cellars, the art
bunker and the wall tunnels) is physically locked and cannot be entered any other way. And a guided
old-town walk is a preference rather than a necessity: pleasant, not required, and reasonable to
skip.

Everything else on this site is a museum you can buy a ticket for at the door.

## Corrections to claims found elsewhere

Each of these is a specific, checkable error that is common in travel writing about
Nuremberg and that costs a visitor money or a wasted journey.

- There is no entry ticket for the Nuremberg Christmas Market. It does not exist, has never existed,
  and there is no timed entry. Pages and listings offering 'Christkindlesmarkt tickets' are selling
  tours or tastings, not admission. Admission is free.
- There is no ticket for the Nazi Party Rally Grounds either. The grounds are open ground. Only the
  Documentation Centre inside them is ticketed.
- Nuremberg Castle does not sell tickets online. Buy at the door.
- Courtroom 600 is closed on Tuesdays, year-round. This catches people out more than any other
  closure in the city, because the rest of the Palace of Justice museum keeps different hours from
  the courtroom itself.
- The 2025 film 'Nuremberg' was shot in Budapest between February and May 2024. Nothing in it was
  filmed in Nuremberg, and there are no filming locations here to visit. The real Courtroom 600 is
  open to the public and is a different thing.
- Nuremberg is in Bavaria but it is not southern Bavaria and it is not alpine. It is in Middle
  Franconia, about 170 km north of Munich, and it is not a base for the Alps.
- The old town's timber-framed appearance is a post-war reconstruction. About 90 per cent of it was
  destroyed in January 1945. This is not a criticism of the city; it is a fact most descriptions
  leave out.
